March 2008

I saw something at church last Sunday that gave me something to think about.

A little girl tugged on her mother’s hand and tried to pull her off course along  the slick sidewalk leading to the front doors of the church.  A bit agitated, the mother held firm to the young hand and spoke of their need to get out of the sleeting rain.  Not easily distracted, the child jerked her hand free, turned her attention to the small clump of shrubs just across a narrow strip of grass, and darted through the soggy turf to get a closer look at the object of her gaze.  She stopped, held out her small gloved hand and gently touched the fuzzy bud of growth starting to peep out of an ice covered branch of the otherwise dormant bush.

With glee in her eye, she looked backwards, just as her mother came to stop beside her.  The smile on the young girl’s face put up an immediate barrier that prevented the mother from punishing her for breaking away.

Excited, the girl pointed to the bud and simply said, “I’m happy, mommy. The flowers are coming again!”

When we stop to think about it, it is easy to overlook the constants in our life, like the passing of seasons, the first appearance of flowers, the longer days of sunlight.  Sometimes we even fail to acknowledge the daily blessings of life like having food to eat, our health and the family and friends who share our lives.  It is easy to forget to acknowledging these things, even if they are special to us.

Your support of our ministry is very special to us and I hope we never neglect to tell you so.  We greatly appreciate the contributions and prayers that you send our way.  Like the flowers of Spring, your support brings encouragement to us as we work to share Christ around the world.  May we never grow tired of appreciating how you give to help us serve!
